Products description

This exceptional box from the mid 20th century is a significant piece of small-scale sacred art with a direct connection to the famous Austrian pilgrimage site of Mariazell. On the front edge, there is the engraving M. Zell, indicating its origin from this important spiritual center. The box was most likely used as a host box (pyx) for the communion of the sick or as a high-quality container for religious mementos. The casing is silver-plated and features a noble interior gilding which was ritually prescribed to protect the holy contents. On the edge of the lid, there are 2 unknown hallmarks indicating artisanal production, with one stamp only being half visible. The material has not been tested.

The small square box shows signs of use appropriate for its age in the form of small dents, which underline the authenticity of this historical pilgrimage object. The lid closes well and securely. With dimensions of approx. 4 x 4 x 1 cm and a weight of 21.2 g, it is a handy yet solid collector's item. The combination of the simple silver-plated exterior and the radiant gilding on the inside makes this box a special find for collectors of sacred objects and memorabilia of the Mariazell pilgrimage.
