Products description

This exquisite snuff box from the Georgian era, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, is a characteristic example of the period's preference for transforming exotic natural materials into luxurious everyday objects. The box consists of a polished cowrie shell flush-mounted into a hinged silver setting. Although there are no official hallmarks, the mounting has tested positive for silver, which was not uncommon for Scottish or English provincial works of this period due to tax exemptions for small gallantry items.

The exterior of the flat silver lid is decorated with elaborate copperplate style engravings, featuring the initials MAB and AH below them in the center. A special historical detail is the fine, hand-etched notes on the inside of the lid, providing a rare glimpse into the provenance or personal use by a previous owner. In the upper area, the letters "JB" in old script can be presumed, with "Wigton" possibly at the end (perhaps Wigton in Cumbria / England?), while below it, within an oval border, is a cryptic combination of numbers and letters. The digit 260 is recognizable, along with mathematical symbols such as = and +, followed by a sequence of letters that could be read as t i s S t a f l e t.

These individual markings could indicate a former address, an inventory number, or a personal dedication, giving the object the character of a unique piece with a mysterious history. The craftsmanship shows the typical robust elegance of Georgian silverwork, as appreciated in centers like Edinburgh or Birmingham. The object is in an authentic original condition with a developed patina that emphasizes the historical charm of this over 200 year old antique. Signs of wear are corresponding to age; the dimensions: approx. 6,5 x 4,8 x 3 cm.
