Products description
This exceptionally rare and historically significant anatomical relief model of human skin dates from around 1900. This impressive teaching aid was manufactured by the renowned Viennese publisher "A. Pichler's Witwe & Sohn," which was known far beyond the borders of Austria for its detailed and technically precise educational materials. The non-dissectible model is masterfully crafted from papermache and shows a detailed cross-section of the skin layers at 100x magnification. It is artistically hand-painted and hand-lettered. The papermache relief is firmly mounted on a classic black wooden board measuring approx. 30.5 x 45.5 cm. On the lower part of the board is the original manufacturer's label (label torn) with the title "Modell der menschlichen Haut" and a complete legend of the hand-written numbers and designations, such as the germinal layer of the epidermis, dermis, sebaceous glands, and sweat gland.
The model, which is over 110 years old, is in authentic antique condition with a beautiful matured patina. Appropriate for its age, the paint layer shows abrasion and paint chips. As can be clearly seen in the attached photos, there are also cracks in the papermache between the relief and the wooden board; however, the model itself remains stably attached to the board. These traces of time underline the historical character of this rare museum-quality exhibit. With dimensions of approx. 26 x 33 cm (papermache relief), this hand-painted vintage relief is a striking highlight for any curated cabinet of curiosities collection or as a subject-specific decorative object in the rooms of a tradition-conscious medical practice. An ideal piece for lovers of historical natural sciences and museum-quality exhibits; small chips, dents, some superficial abrasion, old storage marks; overall beautiful original condition; signs of use appropriate for its age (see photos).
