Products description
This extremely rare and historically significant anatomical model of a median section of the human head dates from around 1900. The life-size exhibit is an outstanding example of early medical teaching aid production. The head was crafted from papermache, a material valued for its lightness and detail before the era of plaster and plastic. The model is artistically hand-painted and mounted on a classic black wooden board measuring approx. 31 x 40 cm. A special highlight is the original sticker on the back from A. Pichler's Witwe & Sohn, which bears the title "Schnitt durch die Mittelebene des menschlichen Kopfes" (Section through the median plane of the human head) and contains a full legend of the hand-written numbers. The non-dissectible model features an authentic paint chip on the nose (see photos), which emphasizes the antique character of this piece that is over 120 years old. A museum-quality object that enriches any professional medical practice or serves as an exclusive centerpiece in a curated cabinet of curiosities.
A median section divides the head exactly into 2 halves and makes the invisible visible. In this representation, the brain in its fine convolutions, the bony structure of the skull base, and the complex pathways of the nasal and oral cavities can be studied. Since papermache models from this era are very fragile, only a few specimens have survived in this state of preservation. It is a fascinating document of medical history that shows how knowledge was conveyed haptically and artistically in the late 19th century; small chips, dents, superficial abrasion, old storage marks; overall beautiful original condition; signs of use appropriate for its age (see photos).
