Products description

Discover an extraordinary topographic 3D relief model of a high mountain range, crafted in the middle of the 20th century. This historical teaching aid from an Austrian school is a fascinating piece of early three-dimensional cartography. The model consists of 9 precisely crafted wooden segments that represent the mountain layer by layer (topographic data). The special feature is that it is a true sectional model: the segments can be completely disassembled.

Great craftsmanship – the model is made of wood and lovingly hand-painted, with details such as a white summit cap and a stream. While one side of the mountain was designed realistically with meadows, rock, and snow, the opposite side features didactic painting in graduated shades of yellow and brown to make the abstract principle of cartographic contour layers tangible. Its isolated-conical shape evokes associations with famous mountains, such as Kirkjufell in Iceland or the idealized form of majestic stratovolcanoes. The exact identity of the depicted mountain remains an intriguing mystery. The identification 824-6/101 written on wood at the base is most likely an internal inventory number from the former school.

This scientific exhibit represents an impressive highlight for any private cabinet of curiosities and serves equally as an inspiring decorative object for any living room. It offers a rare insight into the development of scientific visual aids. Board dimensions: approx. 25 x 39.5 cm – model dimensions: approx. 22 x 36 x 15.5 cm; small chips, dents, superficial abrasion, old storage marks; overall beautiful original condition; signs of use appropriate for its age (see photos).
