African staff of a chief of the YORUBA tribe; African / Nigeria; this Shango staff has slight traces of wear and tear; around 1950; Oshe Shango, a kneeling priest holding a vessel in his hand, scarification marks on the face and the typical double-headed ax on the head; a handle on a slightly conical base at the bottom; such Yoruba Shango dance sticks were worn by at the annual Shango festival and other ritual occasions; Shango (Xangô, Changó) is the most important and popular god (Orisha) among the Yoruba; he is seen as a heavenly father, god of thunder and ancestor of the Yoruba; traces of use according to age; measurements: 49,5 cm; provenance „Jürgen Maurer (1939-2018)“, prominent businessman, art collector and chronicler from Heppenheim (Germany) http://www.kunstsammlungmaurer.de
