Products description
This elegant African prestige axe is by its specific shaping and the characteristic blade guidance attributable to the people of the Makonde from the border area between Tanzania and Mozambique and originates presumably from the mid 20 century whereby the Karema region in Tanzania is more likely the place of origin, as these axes were used there as insignia of status and authority.
The object is characterized by a long slender shaft made of dark brown hardwood which shows a prominent club-shaped thickening at the upper end into which the hand-forged iron blade was inserted transversely which reflects the typical construction of an adze axe. The iron blade itself possesses an elongated narrow shape, which is elegantly curved upwards towards the end and terminates in a gentle point, while the surface of the metal shows an authentic patina with slight traces of corrosion. With its harmonious proportions and the simple but powerful lines this axe is a classic example of the ethnographic craftsmanship of East Africa and served primarily ceremonial purposes or as a dignified companion during festive occasions of the Makonde people. Dimensions: approx. 68,5 x 27,5 cm; Rust spots on the iron; signs of use corresponding to the age.
