Hand-carved fishhook amulett made of Maori (Māori) bone; New Zealand middle 20th century; these hook-shaped pendants are also called "Hei-Matau" and are symbols of luck for seafarers and fishermen, the fishhooks are the most powerful symbols of Maori culture and stand for prosperity and fertility, they are also said to bring luck and safety when travelling across the water; probably made of whalebone or similar; traces of use according to age; measurements: approx. 3 x 5 cm - weight: 4 g
