Products description

A testament to living art history: original lithograph ‘Ignaz Strenzel’ – dedication by his students (around the 19th century). This original lithograph shows the Austrian artist Ignaz Strenzel (1799–1867) in a fine portrait with an oval cut-out and was created as a dedication by his students. Below his name is the title ‘Councillor and Professor of the Imperial and Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna’. Strenzel was a painter, draughtsman and, from 1840, professor of history painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he influenced generations of young artists. In addition to history paintings, he also devoted himself intensively to flower painting, for which he was highly regarded in professional circles. The lithograph is by Jos. Kleiner, a Viennese lithographer active in the 19th century who was known for his detailed portraits of artists and professors. This rare sheet is an authentic testimony to the academic art scene in Vienna during the Biedermeier period and an interesting collector's item for lovers of historical lithographs. Signs of wear consistent with age; the sheet measures approx. 33.5 × 49 cm, the oval image approx. 11 × 14 cm. The condition is used due to age with dark discolouration, foxing, tears at the edges and several creases in the paper.
