Rare porcelain cup (collector's cup) in the shape of a man's face with the name "KARAS" made at the Korosten porcelain factory during the USSR era around 1960 the figure Karas comes from the Ukrainian opera "The Zaporozhian Cossack beyond the Danube" (Zaporozhets za Dunayem) Karas is a Cossack who plays an important role in this piece the cup is hand-painted and partially gilded stamped on the bottom "Made in USSR 'K' 1008-У" the Korosten porcelain manufactory was founded in 1904 in the city of Korosten in present-day Ukraine it developed during the Soviet era into an important producer of utility porcelain and decorative objects especially in the 1950s to 1980s Korosten was known for solid porcelain often decorated in classical or folkloric style Korosten porcelain is today considered a typical example of Soviet everyday culture and is gaining popularity among collectors good condition age-related signs of use dimensions approx. 9 cm high / 7 cm ⌀
