Products description
West Africa, presumably early twentieth century (around 1900), handmade terracotta vessel (scooping vessel; dark/black fired). This authentic ritual vessel is characterized by its deep, semicircular shape and a solid basket-handle. Such vessel types with handles were in West- and Central Africa essential and were for ritual scooping and serving of liquids used. The handle allows the safe carrying and handling during the ceremonies. Particularly noteworthy is, that the vessel is completely decorated all around. The fine ornamentation extends over the entire body up to the underside. Expert opinions tend due to the specific roulette-ornamentation (impressed, wavy line-bands) to the Lobi-culture (Burkina Faso).
Nonetheless is an alternative origin from the Democratic Republic of Congo (e.g. Sengele) not excluded. The vessel is in an age-appropriate original condition with signs of use and age. It shows some missing parts at the rim as well as a characteristic hole in the body. These features underscore the authentic use in ritual or domestic context over many decades away. Dimensions: ca. 23,5 x 18 x 14,5 cm
